FUTURE OF LEARNING

SHOWCASE OF FUTURES-LED THINKING IN EDUCATION

The Ormiston Primary crest reads "capable, connected, collaborative, curious." Each value is written in a different quadrant of a circle, and the four quadrants swirl together and interlock in the centre.

Wellbeing

ORMISTON PRIMARY

As long as Ormiston Primary has been integrating hybrid learning into their curriculum, the school has had a focus on the wellbeing of whānau. They want to make sure that parents are informed on what their tamariki (children) are learning, upskilled on the systems that the school uses, and not experiencing any stress around having to engage with these systems or supervise learning at home. Principal Heath McNeil explains that there is a focus on self-directed home learning, whether this is homework or regular daytime learning done from home. He acknowledges that many parents do not have the time or energy to guide their tamariki through lessons or homework, so the school strives to set ākonga up to direct themselves (building learner agency) and to assign home learning that doesn’t require adult supervision. He speaks about “taking the pressure off of parents” by using learning grids full of digestible, self-led activities for homework and avoiding synchronous home learning sessions as far as possible so that adults are not needed to help set up video calls. The school is, as Derek Wenmoth says, considering parents as “partners in supporting the learning of our students” and taking their wellbeing into account as well.
